The climate crisis and the way out of the pandemic to economic normality make social and environmental responsibility a central topic for Austrian leading companies. More than ever before, the focus is not only on classic key business figures, but also on the impact of entrepreneurial action on the environment and society.

“Business plays a key role in maintaining social cohesion”, explains Leitbetriebe Austria Managing Director Monica Rintersbacher. “When jobs are secure, employees are supported, further development opportunities are given and social commitment is palpable, it creates the trust and confidence that Austria desperately needs at the moment. The award-winning leading companies are role models here and we also want to show this with this year’s motto “Responsibility”.”

The second big challenge facing the leading companies is the forced economical shift towards sustainability. In particular, the “taxonomy” of the European Union sets the direction according to Chairman of the Leitbetriebe Austria Advisory Board Andreas Gnesda: “The taxonomy not only standardises ecological goals, but also social sustainability (previously less considered). Companies therefore have to completely redefine the relationship with their employees and workplace design. Working environments will look different in the future than they did in the past and they will also work better. The transformation must therefore not only be seen as an obligation, but also as a huge opportunity.”

Exemplary initiatives and best practice
The Leitbetriebe business magazine 2022 “Responsibility – Made in Austria”, published in cooperation with KURIER, is the starting signal for the annual theme and presents many exemplary leading company initiatives.

“Austria as a business location needs a new beginning”, claims KURIER editor-in-chief Martina Salomon. “Politics has to create the framework conditions for this and companies must have the courage to leave the beaten track and break new ground in order to remain successful even in a radically changing environment.”

This necessity also exists for the media, adds KURIER Managing Director Thomas Kralinger: “Reliable information, the availability of facts and their distinguishability from fake news are prerequisites for a functioning basis for dialogue. For this purpose, classic media must reach all parts of society and also offer what millennials and Generation Z expect by intensively using all opportunities for digital transformation. In a nutshell: The media’s responsibility is not tradition, but rather innovation.“

The Leitbetriebe business magazine “Responsibility – Made in Austria” has been available since 09.02.2022 in selected specialist shops and newsagents or directly from Leitbetriebe Austria by email to office@leitbetriebe.at
